Studio Monitor

M-AUDIO BX8a
£229 pair

Hype: Offers the best balance between loud and accurate sound in this price range.

Gripe: No means to adjust the sound settings to suit the environment.

Blurb: If big sound with reasonable accuracy is what's required, the BX8a Deluxe could be the speakers for you.

KRK RP6 G2
£370 pair

Hype: RP stands for Rokit Powered! Which is, of course, all hype, but the RP6s do pump out a balanced sound for not a lot of money.

Gripe: Can't find fault at this price point.

Blurb: A good set of powered monitors for a project studio, ideal for anyone demanding quality and a step-up from entry level monitors.

M1 ACTIVE 520
£180

Hype: Compact, crisp sounding monitors with built-in amps.

Gripe: Not as good on the low end as they are on the highs.

Blurb: Great crisp sounding speakers that don't need an amp and work well at normal monitoring levels.

BEHRINGER B103A
£200 pair

Hype: Built by Behringer, the B1030A speakers are active monitors for the project studio.

Gripe: Entry-level sound not great for accurate mixdowns.

Blurb: Entry level monitors for project studios on the tightest of budgets.

MACKIE MR5
£282 pair

Hype: Low cost powered studio monitors using all the latest technology aimed directly at the project studio market.

Gripe: Mackie speakers have a tendency to 'colour the sound', not ideal in a mix-down situation.

Blurb: Cheap and cheerful but not quite up to the standard of some other monitors in this price bracket.
